WHY HELLO!!
My name's Mallorey Garrett and I am SO excited to be the new Art 1 teacher at Overton High School in Nashville, TN!! I've lived in Tennessee all my life and grew up outside of Nashville. I knew Nashville is where I wanted to call my permanent home since I went to college- it's such a wonderful city full of energy and quite an expanding art community. I'm starting this blog to show off everything we will have going on in my art class this year- projects, events, information, announcements and a lot of other things.
So in case anyone is wondering, here are some answered questions you just might have.
Who am I?
I grew up in Lynchburg, TN. A very small town outside of Nashville (home of the Jack Daniels distillery!). I became involved in art when I was 5 years old: I was diagnosed with a severe speech impediment that required me to go into speech therapy at school. My speech teacher in kindergarten introduced me to art therapy. She taught me that I can use art to communicate and express myself without words and also to use as a stress relief. Once I began, I never stopped! Art did so many great things for me as a child with a "disability". It gave me confidence, a sense of identity and it opened up an entire world of creativity I never knew existed.
I knew when I graduated high school, I wanted to go into art education. I got my bachelors degree at the University of Tennessee at Martin in 2009-- THE BEST 4 years of my life!
Where all have I taught?
In 2009, I was hired as the art teacher at Perry County High School where I served and taught there for the next 3 years. I LOVED this school and could not have asked for a better place to start my career. I made so many connections with my students as well as my faculty who were overly supportive of my and my program. Could NOT have asked for anything more.
In 2012, my boyfriend of 3 years at the time, Matt and I got engaged! I got a new job at Mt Juliet Middle School in Mt Juliet, TN so we packed up our cars and moved out to Music City! We were married on October 4, 2012 on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii! It was an absolute dream come true. I'm so blessed to have married my college best friend!
I taught at Mt. Juliet Middle School from 2012-2013. It was a fantastic school year full of learning, but I always knew deep down I wanted to be back in a high school class. I'm so fortunate in my life to have spent time teaching all K-12 grades and know where my true passion lies down.
Here within the next month, it is going to be a BUSY BUSY month full of planning and getting my classroom together. I will be posting many updates of the process. Can't wait... it's gonna be A GREAT YEAR!!!
-Mrs. Garrett
